John F. Thomas, 92, of Potsdam died on Thursday, October 24, 2019 while in the comfort of his home, where he was surrounded by his loving family and under the care of Hospice and Palliative Care.
John was born October 10, 1927 in South Colton, the son of the late Park and Freda (Selleck) Thomas. John graduated from Canton High School and served in the US Army from 1944 – 1948 in the Pacific Theatre. He was employed by Local 322 Construction Union in Massena. John enjoyed watching sports and the news, gardening, cutting and splitting firewood and puttering around the house. He also raised several foster children over the years.
John is survived by his wife, Cherie of Potsdam, her children, Victoria, Joseph, Kim, Cherie, Charlie, Rachel, Dennis, Allen, Jacob and Lynn. Also surviving are 16 grandchildren, a sister, Ruth Duprey and a brother, Lynn “Butch” and wife Sue Thomas and his cats, No Name and Freddie.
He is predeceased by his first wife, Hilda Thomas, two brothers, David and Kenneth Thomas and two sisters, Eileen Houghton and Diane Weems and a grandson, Dalton Deshane.
There will be a grave side service on Monday, November 4, 2019 at 10:00 am at the Pleasant View Cemetery, Clare. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Potsdam Humane Society at 17 Madrid Ave.; Potsdam, New York 13676.
