Hugh Emerson Rood, 78, of West Potsdam died on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Syracuse where he was surrounded by family.
Hugh was born November 29, 1939 in Canton, the son of the late Howard A. and Esther (Forbes) Rood. He graduated from Canton High School and Canton ATC. Hugh proudly served in the US Navy as a submariner on the USS Rasher. He owned and operated Hugh’s Barber Shop in Massena for many years. On July 3, 1970, Hugh married Kathleen “Sooky” Wright Creighton.
Hugh was a member of the Massena Rod and Gun Club, past President of the Pistol Club, a lifetime member of the Waddington American Legion, lifetime member of the Massena AMVET’s, a member of the Canton and Potsdam VFW’s and the NRA.
In his younger days, Hugh was a hunter and work-a-holic, but he remained an avid gun enthusiast.
Hugh is survived by his three children, Vicky (Mike) Keegan of Madrid; Franklin Rood of Canton and Karen (Bob) Henninger of Madrid; a brother, William (Janice) Rood of Canton; six grandchildren, Michael Keegan, Bridget Davey, Amber Bice, Lance and Brooke Rood and Jonathan Curtis. Also surviving are five great-grandchildren, Tori Emma Lavalley, Callie Anne Keegan, Lydia and Kathryn Murphy and Jesse and Mia Curtis.
Hugh is predeceased by his wife, Kathleen, a brother, Robert Rood and a daughter-in-law, Linda Rood.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, November 6, 2018 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm at the O’Leary Funeral Home, Canton. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 7, 2018 at 11:00 am at the funeral home with Rev. Mike Catanzaro, officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at the Brick Chapel Cemetery, Canton.
