Gloria Jean McAdam

Gloria Jean McAdam, 62, of Canton, died peacefully in the comfort of her home where she was under the care of family and Hospice and Palliative Care of the St. Lawrence Valley on Tuesday, January 15, 2019.

Gloria was born December 24, 1956 in Gouverneur, the daughter of the late Donald and Ruth (VanDuzee) McAdam. She graduated from Gouverneur High School and received her Bachelors of Science Degree in Government from St. Lawrence University.

Gloria spent a lot of her adult life in Hartford, Connecticut where she was the President and CEO of FoodShare of Greater Connecticut for 25 years. She was a member of the Asylum Hill Congregational Church and Hartford Heights Tall Club. After relocating back to St. Lawrence County, her community mindedness continued, she was Executive Director of GardenShare in Canton for the past two to three years and has been an active member of the Canton United Methodist Church, taking part in several organizations affiliated with the church and was a founding leader of Canton’s new Cub Scout Pack 11. She was also a member of the Canton Rotary and was awarded the Roatian of the Year award for 2017-2018. Gloria opened her home to several foster children over the years and whether she adopted them or not, the considered them her “children”.

Gloria is survived by three daughters, Anastasia McCarroll of Canton; Lori and Julie McAdam of Hartford, CT; a son Donald “DJ” Gorra of Boston, MA, several grandchildren, including Ethan McCarroll; three brothers, Stephen, Michael and Corey McAdam; a sister, Kim McAdam and several cousins, which include Peggy McAdam, Christine Nash and Alberta “Bertie” Nash as well as her two dogs, Petey and Odin.

A memorial service for Gloria will be held at 4:00pm on Saturday, January 26, 2019 at the Canton United Methodist Church, Court St. A luncheon will follow in the church dining hall. For those in Hartford, a memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, February 2, 2019 at the Asylum Hill Congregational Church; 814 Asylum Ave, Hartford, CT, where a luncheon will follow as well.
