Francis M. “Mahlon” Lobdell, 94, of Canton, passed away on November 30, 2017 while in the comfort of his home, while surrounded by his family and under the care of St. Lawrence Valley Hospice. Born October 10, 1923 in DeKalb Junction, he was the son of the late Richard and Anna (O’Horo) Lobdell. He graduated from Canton High School in June of 1942. Mr. Lobdell served his country in the US ARMY in England, France, Holland and Belgium from February 1942 until December 1945 during WWII.

On March 2nd, 1946 he married Doris L. Thornton. Mr. Lobdell worked at the paper mill in Sissonville, Witherbee and Whalen and at the Canton Post Office, retiring from the Postal Service on 1979. He also worked at the VFW and American Legion for years.

Mr.  Lobdell belonged to the Disabled American Veterans 164, American Legion 19 of Ogdensburg, the Potsdam Elks Lodge 2074, Canton VFW Post 1234 and the Massena Amvets Post 4, all of which were lifetime memberships.

Francis is survived by his wife of 71 years, Doris; five daughters, Patricia (Jake) Jacobi of GA; Joan Lobdell of Canton; Donna (Dennis) Manchester of Massena; Carol (John) Stevens of Potsdam and Karen (Michael) Bulsiewicz of NJ; five sons, Jack Lobdell of Canton; Paul Lobdell of Vermont; George Lobdell of Canton; Raymond Lobdell of Canton and Peter Lobdell and fiancé Amy of Canton; 16 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.

He is predeceased by a son, Michael in 1968, a daughter, Mary Ellen in 1947, a brother Richard Lobdell, two sisters, Barbara Barnett and Martha Mallette and by two grandchildren.

In accordance with his wishes, his body has been graciously donated to Upstate Medical University. Contributions in his memory may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of the St. Lawrence Valley; 6805 US Hwy 11; Potsdam, New York 13676 or to a charity of one’s choice.
