Burton H. Peadbody

Burton H. Peabody, 94, of 464 County Route 21, Hermon, passed away on Tuesday, June 27, 2017 at his home, surrounded by his family, while under the care of St. Lawrence Valley Hospice. Burton was born May 30, 1923 in Pitcairn, the son of the late Harvey I. and Ida (Fenton) Peabody. He attended Hermon area schools and resided in the Hermon area most of his life.

Burton was a Sergeant in the US Army from January 1, 1943 until January 7, 1946. He served in the Battles and Campaigns in Luzon, New Guinea and Southern Philippines, as a squad leader. He was decorated with the WWII Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal and Philip Liberation Ribbon.

He worked on farms in Brasie Corners and Copenhagen. He also worked at Clifton Mines; Alcoa; Sissonville Paper Mill; and construction for a contractor at J&L Steel for 12 years. He ran a dairy farm with his wife Dorothy and had his own top soil and gravel business until his retirement.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, 4-wheeling, cutting wood and traveling and he formed the Grasse Pond Hunting Club in 1953.

On April 7, 1948 he married Dorothy Bacon in Potsdam, with Rev. Paul Roy officiating.

Burton is survived by his wife Dorothy, three sons, Michael Peabody and wife Marilyn of Hermon; David Peabody and wife Sharon of Clare; and Bruce Peabody and wife Jackie of Brewerton; a daughter Judy of Leray, VA, 17 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.

Burton is predeceased by a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Michael Ostrander, grandsons, Michael Ostrander Jr and Harvey Peabody, two brothers, Donald and Stanley and a sister, Hazel Burtis.

A graveside service for Berton will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, June 30, 2017 at the Hermon Cemetery. An informal gathering will be held at Burton’s home following the service.
