Mary E. (Desmond) Akley

Mrs. Mary E. Akley, 82, of Canton passed away in the early morning hours of Saturday, March 17, 2018 in the emergency room at the Canton-Potsdam Hospital. She had been stricken at home.

Mary is survived by a daughter, Helen and Timothy Dominy of Canton; two granddaughters, Catherine and Sarah Dominy; a brother-in-law, Wayne Akley of Potsdam; two close friends, Shirley Silver and Ann Jones and by nieces and nephews.

A granddaughter, Stacy Dominy and a brother-in-law, Elmer Akley predecease her.

Mary was born November 30, 1935 in Potsdam, the daughter of the late Charles and Alice (Burke) Desmond. She graduated from Potsdam High School in 1953. On May 7, 1960, she was married to Leroy E. Akley at St. Mary’s Church with Father Albert O’Brien, Pastor celebrating the marriage.  Mary worked for McGowan’s Drugstore and Farm Credit prior to becoming employed by St. Lawrence County, working as a clerk in the Sheriff’s office and later the DMV as a clerk. She retired in 1990, after 27 years with St. Lawrence County.

Mary enjoyed farming with her husband in her younger days, she was a charter member of the West Potsdam Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and loved her cats and dog.

Calling hours for Mary will be held on Tuesday, March 20, 2018 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the O’Leary Funeral Home Canton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, March 21, 2018 at 1:00 pm at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Canton with Father Brian Stitt, Pastor celebrating. Burial in the spring will be in the St. Mary’s Cemetery, Canton.
