Jack N. Smith, 86, of Canton passed away in the comfort of his home on Friday, February 09, 2018. He was born on January 22, 1932 in Canton, son to the late Clarence Gillett and Anne Morris Bice, and adoptive parents, Erwin and Bernice Smith. Jack graduated from Canton High School in 1948 and served in the Marine Corps aboard the U.S.S. Midway during the Korean War from 1951 to 1954 attaining rank of Sergeant.
Upon his return from service in 1954, Jack became employed by the Operating Engineers Union Local 545 working until his retirement in 1993. On October 1, 1955, Jack married Shirley Planty at the Baptist Parsonage in Richville.
Jack was a history buff, loved reading, hunting, fishing, bird watching and travel. He coached little league baseball in Canton for many years. Being a devoted husband and father, his life revolved around his wife, children and grandchildren.
Jack is survived by his wife of 62 years, Shirley of Canton; six children, Erwin (Karen) Smith of Webster; Michael (Kimberly) Smith of Duluth, GA; David (Lori) Smith of Canton; James (Julie) Smith of Ogdensburg; Debra (Kevin) Mousaw of Canton and Nicole Zeledon of Massena; 17 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are four siblings, Robert and Randy Bice, Sandy Fields and Nancy Hough.
Two brothers, Butch and John Bice and a sister, Mary White predecease him.
Calling hours for Jack will be held on Monday, February 12 from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm at the O’Leary Funeral, Canton. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, February 14 at 11:30 am at the O’Leary Funeral Home, Canton, with Pastor Michael Terrell, officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery, Miner Street; Canton.
