Irene Mary (Dumas) Hewlett

Mrs. Irene Mary Dumas Hewlett, 87, of Canton, NY and Stuart, FL died at the home of her caregiver, August 17, 2016. Irene was born in Moira, NY on October 11, 1928, the daughter of Mary Elizabeth Perry Dumas and William Dumas.

Irene graduated from Moira High School in 1947 at Valedictorian of her class. She married (Milford) Berne Hewlett on August 23, 1947 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Brushton, NY. Mr. Hewlett predeceased her August 2, 1995.

Irene worked for Sears and The Globe Department Store in Waukegan, IL. She also worked for many years at Barbour’s Clothing Store in Canton, NY.

Irene is survived by her four children and their spouses, Scott W. Hewlett and Lynn Magdol of Buffalo, NY; Patrick B. Hewlett and Elizabeth Monteith Hewlett of Greenwich, NY; Mary Kay Hewlett and Scott W. Thompson of Hyde Park, NY and Susan and Robert Pike of Canton, NY. And two granddaughters, Megan Hughes of Cohoes, NY and Hannah Pike of Canton, NY.

Irene was predeceased by her parents and by a brother, Robert Dumas of Saranac Lake and Ogdensburg.

Irene enjoyed homemaking, reading, cards, crafts, and numerous activities while living in Florida in the St. Lucie Falls Community. She volunteered her time at the Stuart Memorial Hospital. She and her husband traveled and lived in Illinois, California, Virginia, Florida, and Guantanamo, Cuba during his twenty year Navy career, and then returned to northern New York. Irene was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Canton and St. Andrew’s in Stuart, FL.

Donations in her memory may be made to St. Mary’s Church in Canton; Hospice of the St. Lawrence Valley or the Salvation Army.
