Gilbert J. Miller

Calling hours for Gilbert J. Miller, 76, of Potsdam will be held on Friday, April 28, 2017 from 11 am to 1 pm at the O’Leary Funeral Home, Canton. Immediately following the calling hours will be a time of reflection, to share a memory of Gilbert. Burial will be in the Brick Chapel Cemetery, Canton.

Gilbert passed away at home on Sunday, April 23, 2017 following a brief illness. Contributions in his memory may be made to the West Potsdam Volunteer Fire Department, the American Cancer Society or to A Little Bit of Heaven Horse Rescue, 35 Hallahan Rd; North Lawrence, NY 12967.

Gilbert is survived by his wife, Marianne Noller of Hubbardsville, NY; daughter, Autumn (Dale) Lindsay of Potsdam; by grandchildren, Andrew Miller, Amanda (Justin) Healey and Alanni (Zach) Baldwin; by great-grandchildren, Maxfield Miller, Arianna-Jean Moody, Ryanne-Jean Loren, William and Nathan Healey and MyahJo and Ashton Baldwin. Also surviving are two brothers, Robert (Marlyne) Miller of Colton; Larry (Cheryl) Miller of Madrid; two sisters, Joan (George) Cary of Potsdam; Shirley Miller of Potsdam and several nieces and nephews.

Gilbert was born January 23, 1941 in Potsdam, the son of the late Richard and Elsie (Smith) Miller. He attended a one room school house and graduated from Potsdam High School and from Canton ATC with an associate degree in Criminology. Gilbert served in the US ARMY from 1960 to 1963.  On October 12, 1963, Gilbert was married to Jean Wright in Colton; she predeceased him on November 22, 2000. Gilbert worked for the Village of Canton DPW and later became a Village Police Officer, retiring after 32 years in 1995 as a sergeant. Following his retirement, Gilbert became a Master Equine Dentist, retiring in January of 2017. Gilbert married Marianne Noller on April 15, 2017.

He was a long time member of the Center Riding Club, AMVETS Post 282 of Potsdam and the Norwood American Legion. Gilbert loved spending time with Autumn and his grandchildren, they were paramount to him. He also had a love for horses and horseback riding.
